* Package name    : libinsighttoolkit
  Version : 1.2
  Upstream Author : Luis Ibanez <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Description : Medical image processing toolkit for registration and
segmentation

Long Description:

ITK is an open-source software toolkit for performing registration and
segmentation. Segmentation is the process of identifying and classifying
data found in a digitally sampled representation. Typically the sampled
representation is an image acquired from such medical instrumentation as
CT or MRI scanners. Registration is the task of aligning or developing
correspondences between data. For example, in the medical environment, a
CT scan may be aligned with a MRI scan in order to combine the
information contained in both.

ITK provides a pipelined data-flow architecture for image processing. It
does not provide visualisation or GUI - these requirements are met by
VTK and fltk, gtk, etc.

Packaging:

This library is well-suited to become part of the Debian-med project. I
will contact the debian-med team once preliminary packages are ready.
The intention is to provide separate packages for runtime, development,
documentation, and examples.

Package name:

There is already a package called 'insight' and another called 'itk'. Thus
the full name 'libinsighttoolkit' was chosen. The contraction of
'libinsighttk' may lead to confusion with a dependence on Tcl/Tk.

Packages of ITK 1.2 are available from mentors.debian.net.

Packages for 1.4 are in beta, to be released shortly. An announcement
will be sent to the insight-users mailing list (at itk.org).
