I am also interested in this package, but having a look at the source code it seems that upstream is bundling and even modifying a lot of other code (I saw sqlite3, but it seems there is more), which makes it quite problematic: the bundled copies should be replaced with the Debian-provided versions, but if upstream is really assuming one specific version (or some specific patches) instead of using the general API, then breakages might happen. All in all, it seems rather hard to support whatever comes out.
I believe the first step would be to identify all the bundled copies of third party softwares and determine whether they are modified or not, and whether the dependency on one specific version is required. I'd like to help, but unfortunately I don't have time right now. The best I can do is to wish good work to those who will have time.
