As of qemu-img 2.1, it does not. However, older versions of qemu-img do not support the "streamOptimized" VMDK sub-format that ESXi prefers, so I've had to use vmdktool to convert to/from that format. vmdktool seems to build on older systems that don't necessarily support qemu 2.1.
