There is already a KDE applet to provide this functionality. It is called OpenOffice.Org QuickStarter (oooqs). URI is http://segfaultskde.berlios.de/oooqs/. I have made a package for version 0.9.5.1 (http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~pc99/debian) and the next version is due soon. I have not considered finding a sponser yet as this program requires KDE3 and OpenOffice.org, neither of which is yet in Debian.
