Just an update : The previous fork known as sm-scc is going to be the "official" stepmania 5.0. So I based my work on 5.0 alpha 3.
I put my effort on the following git repository : https://github.com/emillon/stepmania-debian.git (the repository is huge, so I'll put it on alioth only when it's done) I started the copyright review. The code part seems OK (MIT-like) - modulo a lot of embedded libraries.
