Due to the licence conditions, we certainly can't modify xzx to expect the ROMs to be in multiple files; the licence permits us to compile and run xzx, and that's about it. Fuse obviously is modifiable to do this; the original 'decision' to have the ROMs in multiple files was based purely on that's how I organise the ROMs for other Spectrum-related stuff I do; it would be a pretty trivial patch to expect the ROMs to be in one file. At the moment, I'm not sure it's worth worrying about xzx that much unless someone is going to get the package up to date: the version in Debian is currently 2.9.0 (released May 1999), whereas the current version is 4.0, with 4.1 due out soon.
