This GNOME panel applet is able to display that information to the user. It is capable of displaying information such as window title and current workspace number. I think it could be the case of this going to gnome-applets. The reason I think it probably shouldn't go there is that this is a very specific applet, for people who use gnome together with xmonad, instead of metacity.
