It will also be possible to drop the appliance directly into the local fs for cases without network connection (and possibly to build the appliance via a script as you suggested). There's no shortage of technical solutions in this case it's more a lack of time that keeps libguestfs out of Debian. If somebody wants to work on anything like this, the sources are all here:
