Now we Japanese have two different Japanized TeX implementation - NTT jTeX and ASCII pTeX(both are available in Debian, as jtex-* and ptex-*). The problem is, these Japanized TeX not only have different syntax but also generate non-compatible DVIs, and xgdvi(I maintain it) can only deal with pTeX-generated Japanese DVIs. So when I got jTeX-generated DVIs, I should convert it to pTeX DVI format. With dvi2dvi, you can convert DVI files generated by NTT jTeX into those of ASCII pTeX, and vice versa. dvi2dvi has much more feautures, but the most common use of it would be this kind of job. Please do not confuse this with dvidvi. This is completely different from that.
