Johnson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: "Steven G. Johnson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: libhdf5 -- library and tools for the free HDF5 file format for scientific data Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Package: wnpp Severity: RFP I would like to request that Debian package the HDF5 library and tools, available from NCSA at: http://hdf.ncsa.uiuc.edu/HDF5 HDF5 is a free library and tools for reading and writing a free, portable, binary format for scientific dataset (e.g. large multidimensional arrays). (See below for the license.) Debian already has a "libhdf4" package, but HDF5 is *not* a new version of hdf4, and needs to be a separate package. (libhdf4 is the older HDF(4) library and tools.) HDF5 is a complete rewrite, has a completely different API, and a completely different file format. Moreover, HDF5 is maintained and versioned separately from HDF(4): HDF5 is currently at versin 1.2.2, while HDF(4) is at version 4.1r4. Finally, it is quite likely that people will want to have both HDF5 and HDF(4) on their systems. For example, HDF5 includes conversion tools between the two formats, and those tools depend upon both HDF(4) and HDF5. The license for HDF5 is included below. It is basically a BSD type of license, and is similar to HDF(4), with one difference. The HDF(4) license had the BSD-like advertising clause that made it incompatible with the GPL. For HDF5, NCSA was convinced to remove this clause, changing it into a mere request and not a legal requirement, explicitly to make it GPL compatible. Note that HDF5 is starting to be used in a number of free scientific packages, so it is especially useful to make it available in Debian. e.g. GNU Octave (as of version 2.1.31) and (GNU) R support it.
