Sounds great! I'd be happy to sponsor you, I know the package well enough to review changes and upload them. However, if you change code you should contact upstream, he is very responsive and helpful. So if you want to fix any bug, just go ahead, prepare an updated package and send me the debdiff, then I can nitpick a bit and finally upload it.
