After this fails, I login to the terminal, and do a /etc/init.d/gdmI think what I'd try is to edit /etc/init.d/gdm and at the top of the script add something like "sleep 3m" to cause the script to delay for three minutes before running the rest of the script. This should indicate if the problem is time-related in some way (kernel modules not having time to load before gdm starts, etc).

without ANY probs or errors. So no need to post that XFree86 log I
thought :).
If that makes no difference, I'd probably install another dm, like [xwk]dm and see if that makes a difference. If so, I'd reinstall gdm (but I don't think that's the problem).
Also, I'd try disabling gdm temporarily ("exit 0" at the top of the gdm script) and after a reboot try starting X manually with "startx". Also try this same thing, but instead of "startx", undo the "exit 0" (after a fresh reboot) and manually run the "/etc/init.d/gdm start" routine.
No solutions, but perhaps these tests will provide further clues.
