This is weird.

It was still locked up this morning, so I started closing programs,
preparatory to the necessary "non-clean" reboot.

Except something in one of the programs I was closing must have been wedging
things, because abruptly the hard drives went into overdrive and load
quickly climbed to over 111(!) on a system normally under 0.4.  See, cron
jobs had also been wedged in mid-startup, and they all came unwedged
simultaneously, so I had a daily backup, updatedb, wget, chkrootkit, etc.
all trying to start up and run at the same time.

Now everything's normal, and I'm still very confused.
