do you have the smbfs package installed?
No! Have installed it and now mounting works fine with ## mount -t smbfs -o username=foo,password=bar //MATT/public /mnt/laptop

Re nautilus - even with gnome-vfs-extras this still doesn't work. I read elsewhere that this is a known bug that the Gnome devlopers are trying to fix. Presume that for the moment, there is no fix.
