I'm not sure which documentation you're reading here. If you take a look at /usr/share/doc/alsa-source/README.Debian.gz, it'll have directions on how to set up the drivers 3 different ways. Using make-kpkg along with a custom compiled kernel, using the debian build scrips, and the hard way. :) What you want is to use the debian build scripts. Once you install the appropriate headers package, it's just a matter of going into the alsa directory and doing something along the lines of 'debian/rules binary' and you're done.
