Actually, you don't need to edit a script. If you just installed KDM through the regular apt-get system you should have a script in /etc/init.d/kdm.
Have a look at it, and also at /etc/X11/default-display-manager So probably the only thing you need to do is run: /etc/init.d/kdm start Which will also be done automatically when you reboot.
