I've just run apt-get update && apt-get upgrade and it seams to have broken gnome. When you login at the gdm it comes up with an error of
"Your prefered session type GDM_Failsafe. Gnome desktop is not installed on this machine. Do you wish to make Failsafe Gnome the default?"
If you click through the menu, it loads a failsafe version of Gnome. Gnome was working fine before I update and upgraded, so Gnome was installed, unlike the error message said.
I've googled and not found any thing on this, I have also tried to dpkg-reconfigure gnome, but that doesn't seam to do any think. Please can some one help me out, this is really anoying me.
Does the following file exist /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop ? It should have the following contents:
[Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=GNOME Comment=This session logs you into GNOME Exec=/usr/bin/gnome-session # no icon yet, only the top three are currently used Icon= Type=Application
Cheers,
Jaap
