Okay, I tried gnome-alsamixer, thereby hosing my nice galeon 1.2.12
installation ;^> (beauty doesn't come without a price).
Nevertheless, the problem was not solved.

I may say that I have had sound working with ALSA previously. It
could be that the chip is hosed. Since it's a laptop, I can't really
verify that. I'll try the OSS driver when I get a chance.
