Yes. It turned out that the default DMA setting was too high on my machine
(Asus A7n8x deluxe nforce2).

Check it with hdparm -I /dev/hd? .

My machine is stable with udma3 (was originally at udma5)

Be sure to read hdparm man page before tinkering with it.
