The same sources as above (hearsay alarm!) suggested not actually the
CPU as a reason, but rather the policy regarding boards. While Intel
comes with ready-made chipsets and reference designs to the market, for
Athlons the approach was more like "here's the chip specs, now it's up
to you".

Personally, I haven't followed development too closely for a few years,
being content with what I have. I only woke up recently when Opterons
came out, here AMD shows something that looks like a reasonably coherent
plan.
