GTK and antialias

It looks like gtk disables antialiasing between font sizes 8-16 pt,  
changing /etc/XftConfig has absolutely no effect. So, can anyone tell  
where this can be adjusted?

I have latest gtk/gnome packages from testing,
e.g. 'xterm -fa "Bitstream Vera" -fs 10' works perfectly so my setup  
should be otherwise ok..

Anyone..?
