Have you adapted your /etc/apt/sources.list ? For example:
deb ftp://ftp.nl.uu.net/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb ftp://ftp.nl.uu.net/debian stable main contrib non-free

deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security/ stable/updates main contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-non-US/ stable/non-US main contrib

replace ftp.nl.uu.net with your most favorite debian mirror.

To perform the upgrade, do:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
