At http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/java.html, I read: "Do not use Java with a spoofed user agent, as this may cause crashes (Bug 83376 - a JRE issue)." I unspoofed my UA, and now java works! (The spoof was not really necessary; I was just protecting my privacy a tiny little bit.) Thanks to all those who suggested fixes.
