Yes! (I guess this needs to be installed for 2.4 kernels as well because 
it contains modprobe and his friends)


For booting 2.4 as well as 2.6, you need modutils >= 2.4.26 as well as
module-init-tools.
I've got this all installed. My system runs the latest bleeding edge 
debian packages.
