Thanks Chris, I did not know how Nautilus managed the desktop. However I still cannot get the desktop to change unless Nautilus controls it. So at this point it appears that chbg is not compatible with Gnome 2.4. Chbg has an option to force background to Nautilus. So far I have seen no difference with it. Thanks for the pointers.
