This is a trick supported in X4.3, using the "XRANDR" extention (X resize & rotate, if my memory serves). If you're running Unstable, and have updated recently enough to have X4.3, you'll find a command-line "xrandr" command .. apt-cache search xrandr also coughs up a "gnome-randr-applet".
