What do you mean by giving grub a "new install path?"  What steps have
you taken to set it up?  What have you typed in at grub's command line?

Wher is grub installed? (vide post re: drive layout).

Dude... get to know your drives.

Are you using Lilo or Grub??  It is hard to tell since the information
you provide is so minimal.  It seems that you have installed things. 
Did the machine ever reboot?  Do you have multiple attempted installs
with "broken" bootloaders on the MBR's of different drives?

It appears that you need to create a map of what's where on your
drives. This is for yourself as much as getting help from others.

If you Are using grub, you need to get to know it better too.  I don't
know what the installer does in setting this up for you, but (what for
me was) a good tutorial on grub's use and setup came from

That's cool.  

Look at this as an adventure where your mission is to dive into the
bowels of your computer far deeper than any ordinary Wintendo user ever
dreams of doing.  :-)
