term colors

How do you get colors in the term windows?

My terms (xterm, wterm, any-term really) has always been just Black and 
White.

I've noticed that some other distros have defined a set of colors for 
different file types (dir, executable...) and was wondering if there is 
a set definition of colors.

I think I saw it once on a debian installation that I was playing with, 
but I haven't seen it before or since.
