I think you snipped some earlier output that may have been useful. What does your scripts/kconfig/.tmp_qtcheck look like? Did you do a 'make clean' (or make-kpkg clean or whatever) before trying 'make xconfig' again?
thanks for all the help. When I did the fakeroot mak-kpkg clean, the problem went away.
