Well you've done your homework and checked the obvious things. It looks to me as though your new kernel is missing a crucial option from its config. Try a diff of the old and new configs. There will be a lot of noise, going from 2.4 to 2.6. But the answer is probably in there, somewhere in the SCSI section. How did you configure your 2.6 kernel?
