Installation - hard drive partitoin

hi,

I am trying to install debian sarge 3.1 (20040229) on a 4 year old sony 
viao laptop from cd set. It seems the hardware is detected fine.
After selecting keyboard/country, and at the stage 'Partition a hard 
drive' in the main menu, when I select that nothing happens.
The screen goes blue and comes back to main menu. I cant proceed any 
futher. There are no error messages in tty3 or in /var/log/messages.
tty3 and messages file shows only insmod...  using /lib/modues...  those 
only. no particular error message.

What do I do now?
