Bingo! I had tried running OO in a terminal using various versions of openoffice.org oo.o etc but not one that worked. Using oowriter gave an error message:- You have no entry for Open Office 1.1.0 in ~/.sversionrc (actually I have no ~/.sversionrc but lets not get pedantic) yet the directory /home/steve/openoffice/1.1..0 exists. Please remove ~/openoffice/1.1.0 & try again. On doing that it re-ran setup & off it went. I still must try & get my head round locales though. Very many thanks.
