The Debian community is quite aware of the installer scare, and is working on a new one. Just keep in mind the humongous amount of platform Debian supports with *volunteers*, and you start to get the picture why some distro X has a fucking cool installer for...i386. You should be using tasksel and not selecting 9000 packages by hand. The current Debian installer, once you know your way around it is quite flexible, actually and you might come to like it. If you're very new to GNU/Linux installation, you're expected to screw up. Do it again. No pain, no gain. If you don't appreciate the effort put into Debian by nice people called developers, quit using it.
