We've just put 16 new computers into operation with Intel Pro 1000 NICs and the 2.4.24 kernel supports these very well. I had trouble with the e1000 driver in the 2.4.20 kernel and in looking at the driver source code it appears to me that that driver is undergoing (or at least underwent) some significant development in recent kernel versions.
