XML is the way to go. I wrote my own client: http://home.comcast.net/~40208.nospam/pim.png with a bunch of keyboard shortcuts. Emacs would probably have been superior, but I don't like emacs. I tried every other PIM-, list-maker, or database-frontend in Debian and gave up and wrote one that works the way I want it.
