Sounds like your resolution is set too low. Try getting out of X and running "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and play with the resolution/color depth settings.


Also,
I don't know how to use SU to change from user to root in the gnome desktop.




Just open up a terminal window and type "su -". Better yet, use "sudo"; it offers several advantages from a safety/security standpoint.
