This has been fixed for me for quite a while; I really can't remember when, though, and I never noticed why. It could've been an upgrade of coreutils, or a fix in the kernel, or perhaps even an upgrade of libc6 (fwiw, I'm running libc6 version 2.3.2.ds1-10). I noticed on your gentoo bugreport that you mentioned your nfs exports are reiserfs. So are mine, so that's not necessarily the problem.
