I have two Debian partitions on a machine that I just built, one is a small testing partition for trying out various software that I don't want leaving residue on my main partition, trying out various changes, etc.. The second partition is my main partition for actual use.
Both were built as follows:
woody base install only upgraded to sid 2.6.0-test11 kernel various packages like less, gpm, vim, w3m, etc. x-widows-system VIA Epia binaries manually installed, X is using the via driver. gnome-desktop environment
Then:
msttcorefonts x-ttcidfont-conf
Now, this is where things get weird... at this point on the testing partition, I fired up Mozilla and Mozilla-Firebird. Beautiful fonts, nice and crisp... no more Apple ][ look!
Great!
installed msttcorefonts and x-ttcidfont-conf on my main partition.... fired up Mozilla - boy is that ugly.. fired up Mozilla-Firebird... wow. ugly.
after trying with no success to get everything working, I reinstalled again from woody base on up. Still no luck.
copied the XF86config from the testing partition to the main partition... no change.
copied XftConfig over... again, no change.
I am baffled by what I could possibly have done differently on the two partitions! I would really like to get anti-aliased fonts working on my main system.
