noteedit - to graphically enter notes on a staff and playback with midi rosegarden4 0.96 - sequencer / notation editor (Cubase clone) soundtracker - the best tracker for linux IMHO timidity - for midi if you don't have a hardware synth for playback Noteedit is probably the easiest to use. Start timidity in "server mode" (timidity -Os -iA -B2,8 &) and then configure noteedit to use the softsynth and you are set.
