XP breaks samba. I managed to work around it once, but it only worked sometimes and everybody had to be set up just right and I can't remember how we did it. Microsoft recently released, for free, UNIX Services For Windows 3.5. I suggest you install that instead, since you get the benefit of being able to use NFS for filesystem sharing and I think LPR for printing as well.
