I would recommend the latter. Disk space is cheaper than RAM, and it's better to be able to keep going rather than grind to a halt when you do run out of actual RAM (I've certainly managed to use all of 512MB; not more than once or twice, but it would have been a pain if I hadn't had swap available to keep me going).
