Does the wall(1) command work for you? It doesn't for me, and this is probably related to the discontinuation of the utmp/wtmp files in Trixie. https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/release-notes/issues.en.html#the-last-lastb-and-lastlog-commands-have-been-replaced At least, that's my guess.
