I'm curious why you say that. I have a local installation of nextcloud, and I find it neither huge or bulky. The base installation can be time consuming, with lots of fiddly details to handle: firewalls, clients for mobile phones to install and set up, etc.. A bit of familiarity with PHP won't hurt. But that's once done and it's operating it chugs along. Start out with the minimal set of applications, and add only as needed. I use Calendar, Contacts, and Notes the most. There are clients for all of those for iPhone and (I believe) Android. Since you are on this list, I guess you plan to use Debian. Good. Nextcloud is one of the very few applications I don't install from the Debian package.
