Depends on the medium. But on those (were they 16K?) utterly expensive USB sticks with a write protect switch reportedly you could: the switch just (reportedly) communicated intention. My only source is memory, so grain of salt and that. Trying to research that, I noticed with surprise that those switches seem again to be a thing these days, just not at the price level my local dealer would care to carry. That said, if your capitalist's weight commands an ICE-style praetorian (something customary in larger parts of the world nowadays, sigh) they can kick down your door to throw that pesky switch, so...
