It's not convenient for me, because it's not sufficient just to create /etc/papersize anymore apparently (US locale, French keyboard, Brother A4 paper laser printer). You have to install libpaper2 and run paperconf, which itself creates /etc/papersize that takes care of TEX and company and also run localectl LC_PAPER=fr_FR.UTF-8 to boot, which handles GTK apps and company. Of course, you can't satisfy all the people all the time, and you can say that it is a sensible default.
