That does look like the brute force and ignorance approach. I'd take a look at chapter four of the Release Notes, which uses apt, but also a more fine-grained approach. Such steps as # apt upgrade --without-new-pkgs for example. (Why do you install aptitude just after having run it?) Cheers, David.
