This is similar to my own experience: when debian bumped Gnome from 2 to 3 the display on my old and clanky computer went black, because the hardware wasn't up to the demands Gnome 3 put on it. So I threw out gnome and installed an old plain window manager (can't remember which one) and later discovered MATE and that's where I have stayed.
