That's a way, but if you're dealing with a compendious volume from which you would like to extract page 4, 7, 12, and 438 it can get tedious. In fact, I'm uncertain if pdfseparate can do this job; it seems you can only select a consecutive series of pages to extract (-f 1 -l 4). I know pdftk is capable of it, though.
