A classical race condition. :)) At least you tested that https://wiki.debian.org/RepackBootableISO still works. (3 Debian releases happened since it was written.) Could you make a boot test with https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-13.1.0-amd64-standard.iso whether it boots up to a GRUB screen. (This is the smallest Debian Live ISO, which has no graphical desktop.) Why i ask: I do not see the workaround in debian-live-13.1.0-amd64-standard.iso . Its /boot/grub/grub.cfg sources /boot/grub/config.cfg which contains the line terminal_output gfxterm Before that line it sources /boot/grub/theme.cfg But it does not look as if any *.cfg under /boot uses the "echo" command. I also mounted /mnt/iso/boot/grub/efi.img as /mnt/fat and looked into /mnt/fat/boot/grub/grub.cfg , which is the first .cfg loaded by GRUB during EFI booting. No "echo". https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?repeatmerged=no&src=live-build shows no bug report about black screen on booting. The live ISO shows with xorriso -indev debian-live-13.1.0-amd64-standard.iso -pvd_info the line Creation Time: 2025090609425500 which says that it was made on 06 Sep 2025 09:42:55 UTC at the same day as installation DVD-1 (06 Sep 2025 12:06:12) and netinst (06 Sep 2025 10:27:20). So the problem might still be present in debian-live. Have a nice day :) Thomas
