tomas and RLH, thanks so much. RLH’s method works, and I think that’s what I used to do.

The only reason I use vi is I can’t use emacs easily in a terminal window.

I've found "pwfeedback" option for sudoers config quite useful to get feedback when you enter sudo password. The information about it buried deep inside "man sudoers" and I've discovered about it just recently by accident. It could drastically improve quality of life and I would not be surprised if not many users know about it. The security impact described in man page is negligible for me, because not so often I have someone watching over my shoulder when I type anything really, and I don't think my 12 random characters (a-z A-Z 0-9 + specials) user password, which I type by muscle memory, will be vulnerable anytime soon.
